CHAMPIONSHIP REFEREE VISIT
We had a very special visit from Championship referee, Oli Langford today at Smithills.
Pupils gained an insight into what referees have to go through, the skillset referees need going onto a football field, leadership, resilience and strength.
The session progressed as pupils got the opportunity to become a referee in mock offside decisions, which got humorous in terms of the pupils taking control of the crowds for an offside decision. At the end of the session the pupils’ viewed decisions in slow motion as to whether the foul warranted a card or the passage of play to continue.

On the visit to Smithills today, Oli said, “I think there was a bit of apprehension about this man standing in front of us telling us what we need to do to become a referee, but once the interactions started I think it was fantastic. The kids were engaging in decisions, I put them under a bit of pressure with regards to why they chose that outcome and I thought the kids were great with their responses”.
