New Changing Rooms

On the 13th June, after months of hard work by all those involved, the much anticipated new pool changing rooms were officially opened by the Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Roger Hayes, accompanied by his wife Jaleh, the Mayoress.

Other VIP guests included Mr David Hemsley, representing Sport England,  Mr M Smith from HH Smith and Sons, Alex Foster, Team GB triathlete and Joshua Mitchum from Bolton Lads Club. Staff, trustees and governors were also in attendance.

The project was significantly funded by a Sport England grant and involved the total refurbishment of our old 1957 open plan changing facilities, including a small new build extension. Special  and sincere thanks must go to HH Smith and Sons Co Ltd, the locally based Whitefield construction company who did an absolutely fabulous job, not only to a high standard, but worked so well with school, that whilst all the construction was going on, it never stopped school and the community using the pool.

To celebrate the event, school organised a mini swimming gala with four teams – the Sport England team, Mayors Team, HH Smith Team and the Alex Foster Team – all cheered on by guests and members of staff. The winning swimmers were presented with medals and trophies by their relative sponsor.

The new changing rooms have received very positive feedback from all the pool users. We are also increasing pool usage, offering pool hire to primary schools though the day, recently hosting St Peters Primary school and can also offer swimming for those less able bodied, as the grant included a pool hoist and disabled changing facilities.

Overall the new changing rooms are a huge benefit to both pupils and member of the public who use the facility. If any group is interested in hiring the pool, please enquire via the Smithills Sport Centre website.
