In Year 7, 8 and 9 students follow a range of topics covering the Key Stage Three Science National Curriculum. All students learn aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. At Smithills School, we recognise the excellent learning that has taken place at Key Stage Two and build on this. Our pupils learn science in a variety of contexts involving practical use of equipment, experiments, investigations and information technology.
In Year 7, 8 and 9 students study 6 different topics (Biology 1, Chemistry 1, Physics 1, Biology 2, Chemistry 2, and Physics 2). Each topic however will be linked to the key aims that underpin the New National Curriculum for September 2014:
developing scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
developing understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
developing the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
Each half term teachers use topic tests and assessment tasks to assess levels achieved and track progress against targets set. In the summer term students complete an end of year exam.
