How Can I Help My Child With Literacy?

LITERACY & READING | READING WITH YOUR CHILD

All students in Years 7, 8 and 9 are expected to have a library book in their school bag every day. If you can, please check that they are reading regularly and have a library book. If you are able to spend some time reading with your child, this will also support them to improve their reading age and reinforce the importance of reading regularly.

Literacy targets

All students should be receiving regular ‘literacy targets’ from teachers in their exercise books. Please check these, and if you are able to, support your child to undertake work set that will improve their understanding of the target. This might include redrafting or reviewing work already undertaken.

Accelerated Reader

If your child doesn’t have a library book, or wants to read a book not available in the library, you can check whether that book is part of the Accelerated Reader programme here http://www.arbookfind.co.uk/UserType.aspx - all you need to do is type in the name of the book.

If your child is reading a book that is not part of the programme, please encourage them to have an additional book to read that they are able to take a quiz on. It is the quizzing element of the programme that allows us to check that students are reading books that are of the correct difficulty to improve their reading age.
