Literacy and Reading

LITERACY AND READING

Welcome to the Literacy and Reading section of our website. Here you will find all the information you need about literacy in school, literacy for learning, how you can help your child with their reading and information about our library. Please check back regularly for updates on events and competitions.

LITERACY IN SCHOOL

Accelerated Reader

All students in Years 7 and 8 are expected to follow the Accelerated Reader programme, supported by their English teacher and Librarian. We expect all students to read for at least 20 minutes per day, and we also devote some time within lessons to support them to develop their reading. By reading and quizzing regularly, students can dramatically increase their reading age and therefore their ability to access the curriculum.

To find out more about the Accelerated Reader programme, please visit their website: http://www.renlearn.co.uk/accelerated-reader/

Literacy Across the Curriculum

All teachers are teachers of literacy, and as such your child should expect that their work will be marked for literacy across all their subjects.

We also hold regular Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) sessions for students in Years 7, 8 and 9 to encourage them to read literature related to all subjects they study in school.

World Book Day

Each year, we celebrate World Book Day (WBD) with a week of events.

For WBD 2017 we held competitions, activities in the library, activities in English lessons and all subjects celebrated reading in some way at the beginning of their lesson.

Please check the updates section for further information about World Book Day 2018.
