HEAD OF SUBJECT - MR D ALLEN
At Smithills School we are proud to offer two key areas of design technology for our pupils in years 7 and 8 to experience product design and food technology. Our industry standard facilities and equipment allow our pupils to gain some insight in to how professionals might work in design technology related fields.
Pupils in Years 7 and 8 will receive 72 hours of design technology per year with one lesson per week spent in each of the key areas. Our aim is to offer pupils a range of learning opportunities that will help develop their designing and manufacturing skills and allow them to produce high quality products with a range of materials and ingredients.
In food technology the year 7 curriculum focuses on healthy eating and lifestyles and gives pupils the opportunity to learn about, design and make a variety of food products. The product design curriculum in year 7 allows pupils to develop a variety skills, including electronics, whilst producing a range of products inspired by 20th century design movements and real life problems.
At KS4 we offer a range of specialist courses to extend pupils experience of design technology. These include GCSE hospitality and catering, GCSE product design and BTEC engineering.
